About This Quote / Bid Calculator

A bid that only adds up materials and labor is a break-even number, not a business number. This calculator builds your profit margin into the price before you ever hand the customer a number, so winning the job means actually getting paid for it.

Materials markup and labor are priced separately on purpose. Markup on materials covers the cost of sourcing, driving to the supply house, and carrying inventory risk; labor is priced on the hours the job will actually take. Bundling them into one number tends to underprice long, labor-heavy jobs like rewires and overprice quick panel swaps.

Permit and inspection fees are easy to forget when you're bidding fast between service calls, but they're real cash out of pocket before the job even starts — leaving them out of the bid means eating that cost yourself.

A frequent search among contractors is “what should I charge for an electrical job?” The honest framework is: real materials, real labor, permits, plus a margin that covers callbacks, code changes mid-job, and the weeks when work is slow.

About This Job Profit Calculator

Getting the job done isn't the same as getting paid for your time. This calculator checks what a finished job actually returned after materials, labor, and the costs that don't make it onto the invoice.

“Other job costs” is where profit quietly disappears — disposal fees, equipment rental, a subcontractor brought in for a specialty task, or a permit re-inspection. Contractors who only track materials and labor consistently overestimate their real margin.

Margin percentage matters more than the dollar figure when you're comparing job types. A $1,000 profit on a $10,000 new-construction rough-in (10% margin) is a very different result from $1,000 on a $2,000 panel upgrade (50% margin) — one of those is a much better use of your crew's time.

If a job comes in under margin, compare it against the original quote from the calculator above — the gap usually points to either an underbid scope or a job that ran into unexpected complexity.

Hourly Rate Calculator

Work out the minimum you need to charge per billable hour.

Billable time

Hours actually billed to customers, not total hours worked.

About This Hourly Rate Calculator

Charging what the electrician down the road charges tells you nothing about whether your rate covers your van payment, insurance, and licensing. This calculator works backward from your real overhead to the rate you actually need.

Billable hours, not hours worked, drive this number. Drive time, estimates, paperwork, and waiting on inspections all eat into a work week without generating billable time — which is why the real minimum rate is usually higher than owners expect.

Vehicle and fuel costs, tool replacement, and licensing renewals are easy to under-budget because they're irregular rather than monthly — spreading their annual cost across your overhead here keeps them from quietly eating your margin.

This is your floor, not your rate card. Once you know the minimum, local market rates, your specialty (commercial vs. residential), and your license level determine how far above it you can reasonably price.

Estimated Tax Reserve

A planning estimate for what to set aside each period. Not tax advice.

About This Tax Reserve Calculator

Self-employment tax is really two taxes stacked together — the employee and employer share of Social Security and Medicare — on top of regular income tax. This calculator breaks the two apart so the number isn't a mystery.

Vehicle mileage is one of the largest deductions available to a mobile trade like electrical work, which is why it gets its own line here instead of being buried in “other expenses.” Track it consistently, not just at tax time, since the IRS standard rate changes every year.

Reserving a percentage the same day you get paid — rather than waiting until the quarter ends — turns a big tax bill into a non-event, because the money was never treated as spendable in the first place.

This tool is a planning estimate, not a filed return. Entity type (sole prop vs. S-corp), state tax, and deductions all change your real number — confirm with a licensed tax professional before you rely on it.

Business Runway Calculator

See how many months your savings would cover you with no income.

🔒 Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is sent or stored.

The full amount you have saved right now — not a monthly figure.

About This Business Runway Calculator

If the phone stopped ringing tomorrow, how long could you personally keep going? That's the question this calculator answers, using your actual savings and monthly expenses.

This is deliberately a personal number, not a business bank account number — it tells you how long you could hold steady while you drum up new work, not how long an LLC survives on paper.

Contractors with seasonal swings (storm season, new-construction cycles tied to local building activity) get the most value from running this right before their historically slower stretch, not right after a strong one.

A short runway is information, not a verdict — it's a signal to build a deliberate buffer, the same way you'd stock an extra panel before a job you know is coming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tax advice?

No. The tax reserve calculator combines a standard self-employment tax estimate (15.3%) with the federal bracket you select, for planning purposes only. It doesn't account for deductions, credits, state tax, or entity type. Always confirm your actual tax obligations with a licensed tax professional.

Does this work if I run an LLC or S-corp, not a sole proprietorship?

The tax reserve calculator assumes sole proprietor or single-member LLC self-employment tax rules. If you're taxed as an S-corp or have employees on payroll, your actual tax picture is different—talk to your accountant.

Is my data safe?

Yes — these calculators run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type here is sent anywhere or stored.
